Come Follow Jesus

Calvary Chapel South aims to be a family of faith. Our passion is to unashamedly love Jesus and loves others with everything we’ve got. We want to transform our community and our world by making Jesus followers of every nation, baptizing them, and teaching them the Word of God.

Our History

Jesus said, “I will build My church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” – Matthew 16:18

In 1987, God planted the seed for Calvary Chapel South that would take root 3 years later. Pastor Kevin Day, along with some men from Calvary Fellowship in Seattle began meeting at the Riverside Inn in Tukwila for a Wednesday morning prayer breakfast. It was there that they would pray for God to provide a Calvary Chapel in the south end.

In October of 1988, while on a mission trip to Japan, a small group of people were packed into a van and passing around a copy of the book Harvest. In the last chapter, Pastor Chuck Smith (Founder of the Calvary Chapel Movement) lays out the simple principles and philosophy of a Calvary Chapel ministry. Principles like “The primary purpose of Church is to build up the Body of Christ by equipping the saints for the work of the ministry,” accomplished by “the Spirit of God working through the Word of God to change the people of God.” That “complete dependence on the Holy Spirit is vital.” That “where God guides, God provides.” That “every Christian is a minister, and a minister is called ‘to serve and not be served.’” That “the outward appearance is never the basis of God’s acceptance because God looks at the heart.” And other simple truths like trusting God, taking ventures of faith and seeing what God might want to do. It was lessons like these that inspired “The South End Bible Study.” Securing a lease for the Tukwila Community Center, we began on January 4, 1990.

Since then, by the grace of God, Calvary Chapel South has become a family of faith to hundreds of people. Lives have been changed by God as we have gathered week after week to simply worship Jesus, study the Bible, and care for one another.

Since our very first gathering, God has built this church one day at a time. We can’t wait to see what He will do next.

Our Worldview

We understand that God calls us to reach outside of our church walls to the world around us. We believe that as we understand the Word of God and grow closer to Jesus, we will become more loving and caring toward others. Our passion for Bible teaching and small groups is not the end. As we grow in our faith, we become more compelled to proclaim and demonstrate the gospel to our community and our world.

We have many outreach initiatives that help us live out Jesus’ calling to proclaim and demonstrate His love locally, nationally and globally. We show our love and appreciation for the teachers at the school next door with appreciation dinners. We love on the homeless with meals, haircuts, and friendship. We train refugees in our café so they can gain job skills and be introduced to Christian families. We reach across the world to care for orphans in Uganda, support medical teams in Iraq, and teach the Bible in closed countries.

Would you like to be a part of what God is doing in our community and world through Calvary Chapel South? We would love to see you get connected in a small group, join a serve team, and become part of our family of faith as we respond to Jesus by reaching out beyond our walls.
